MACAU WON’T RENEW 100 FOREIGN CASINO EXECS’ WORK PERMITS

Macau’s six concessionaires may soon be required to place more locals into managerial positions, following the latest plans from Macau’s Labour Affairs Bureau.

The Macau Daily Times reported that Wong Chi Hong, speaking at a plenary session at the Legislative Assembly (AL) early last week, revealed plans to raise the number of residents required to be in managerial positions in the gaming industry.

Macau’s Five Year Development plan originally aimed to have 85 percent of casino upper and middle management to be filled by Macau residents by 2020. However, Wong says he hoped to have that figure achieved by the end of this year.

“The government hopes that in 2017 this percentage will hit 85 percent when it comes to local managers and top executives,” said Wong. “It seems there are over 100 non-local workers in resort facility management. And we have already told the gaming companies we will not renew those work permits,” he said.

The report offered no further insight as to when those international execs’ work permits might expire.
