NEW VINTAGE MCLAREN VALE RELEASE

The Angove McLaren Vale team is pleased to release the new vintage 2017 Grenache Shiraz Mourvèdre and 2017 Chardonnay (in their new livery and bespoke bottle).

Winter in 2016 had good rainfall rain events were spread out with few heavy soaking rains. The spring that followed was dry resulting in low disease pressure but requiring early irrigation to ensure balanced vine canopies. January and February were cool and mild leading to a later season than previous years. This longer ripening period resulted in fantastic flavour development meaning 2017 will be a great year for McLaren Vale.

The new vintage 2017 Chardonnay is sourced from the 30-year-old Stoeckel Vineyard on the outskirts of the McLaren Vale township. This north facing gentle slope has a fine sandy topsoil over a base of Biscay clay that retains moisture to nurture the vines through the growing season. Only free run juice is transferred to French oak barrels for fermentation. Once complete the barrels are topped and stirred weekly to promote complexity and mouthfeel.  Pale straw with olive hues, aromas of cantaloupe, white peach, citrus and smoky French oak precede a clean and refined, soft and creamy palate with good length and a fresh finish.

The 2017 Angove Family Crest McLaren Vale Grenache Shiraz Mourvèdre is crafted from 41% Grenache, 34% Shiraz and 25% Mourvedre. The Grenache parcels are from the sandy soils of the Swann Vineyard in Blewitt Springs and the Mayfield Vineyard in the Sellicks foothills. The Shiraz comes from the exposed slopes of the Cheasley vineyard high on the Sellicks Hills overlooking Gulf St Vincent, also home to the Balnaves Vineyard where the Mourvèdre is grown. The perfume and dark chocolate of Blewitt Springs balancing the pepper and spice of the cooler, more southerly Sellicks vineyards.

Handpicked, hand sorted and then carefully crushed and destemmed, each parcel was fermented separately. The wines were pressed in a wooden basket press and allowed to mature in 2nd and 3rd use French oak puncheons and hogsheads for 9 months before the final fun stage of blending and bottling.

“We are immensely proud of all of the wines we are crafting in McLaren Vale” stated Tony Ingle, Angove Chief Winemaker “The raft of positive third party endorsements they are receiving really does create a buzz amongst the winery crew and makes them all strive that bit harder to make the wines even better.”
