RADIO TO BAN GAMBLING ADS DURING LIVE SPORTS  & MERIVALE’S EMPIRE CONTINUES TO GROW

Australians will soon hear less gambling and betting advertisements on the radio as Commercial Radio Australia (CRA) is planning to implement a ban on said ads during live sports events.

The CRA ban on gambling ads would start five minutes before and after the live sports events. It is only during the breaks in play when gambling ads will be allowed to be played.

The ban is just a proposal for now. CRA said that they will still accept comments and responses to the proposal until December 15. If things go according to plan, the new rules will be implemented on March 18.

The changes follow scrutiny surrounding gambling advertising across multi-platforms during live sporting events.

In 2013, former Nine CEO David Gyngell conceded mistakes were made by allowing Tom Waterhouse to spruik live odds with commentators during NRL matches.

This year, a new study by Clarity Strategic Research suggested gambling advertising had “crossed a line”, with betting firm representatives being positioned as equal to sports experts.

HEMMES CONTINUES TO GROW MERIVALE EMPIRE WITH ANOTHER SYDNEY ACQUISITION

Justin Hemmes has cemented his position as the largest single owner of popular Sydney pubs, splurging more than $70 million on the purchase of three major hotels over the past three months.

His latest acquisition is Bondi’s Royal Hotel, the sale of which was hotly contested, with over 80 enquiries and 10 competitive bids for the hotel.

In a statement on the purchase, Merivale emphasised its focus on the greater Sydney market.

“Merivale has continued its commitment to Sydney hospitality with the acquisition of the Royal Hotel Bondi. The Bondi Road property joins recent additions The Collaroy Hotel on Sydney’s Northern Beaches and Vic on the Park in the Inner West. Merivale will receive the keys to the Royal Hotel in July 2018. Future plans for the venue will be announced in due course.”

According to News Limited, Hemmes said that even after buying his 10th Sydney pub in three years, he is still open to expanding the Merivale portfolio.

Overall, Merivale operates 65 hospitality venues including the Ivy and the Establishment in the Sydney CBD and the popular Coogee Pavilion in the eastern suburbs as well as The Newport on Sydney’s northern beaches
