FROM MARCONI TO MARCONI: HOW FOOTBALL IS CHANGING LIVES 4,000 KM AWAY.
When Club Marconi learned that the Youth Off The Streets Overseas Relief Fund’s (YOTS ORF) Youth Centre in Timor-Leste is in one of Dili’s poorest districts, i.e. Marconi, supporting its Football Outreach Program felt like a natural fit.
Two Marconis. Nearly 4,000 kilometres apart. Connected by football, community and a shared belief that every young person deserves the chance to belong.
Club Marconi made a generous cash donation to the Outreach program, along with footballs, sports bags, drink bottles, caps and twenty-three brand-new blue and white playing jerseys. Those jerseys will soon become the uniforms of two new teams, one boys’ and one girls’, proudly representing the Youth Off The Streets for the very first time in a Dili schools’ tournament.
YOTS Youth Worker Ramos, proudly wearing his Marconi Champions T-shirt, will coach the new teams, supported by encouraging video messages, drills and tips from Marconi’s football department.
In Timor-Leste, football is far more than a game. Families gather around tiny screens to watch international matches. Children play barefoot on rocky ground for hours on end, often using a plastic bottle if they don’t have a ball. If there’s only one pair of shoes, friends share them, one each.
So, when YOTS ORF Outreach staff arrived carrying a new football, still sealed in its plastic wrapper, the children stopped in their tracks. It was the first time many had ever seen a brand-new ball.
It’s a reminder that sport doesn’t just produce better players.
It builds confidence, resilience, friendships and hope.
This partnership is just one example of how Australian clubs and hospitality venues can make a genuine difference beyond their own communities.

Youth Off The Streets Overseas Relief Fund is currently seeking partners to support a range of sustainable community programs in Timor-Leste, including Girl Power (an engagement and health support program); hospitality and employment training and sponsorship; literacy and education pathways, early childhood education, and youth development initiatives.
We are also in the process of pulling together a building project for the Youth Centre which is in bad disrepair. We have some willing tradies who have volunteered to work on the project, but we need funds to get them there.
