MINNS LABOR GOVERNMENT TO MAKE NSW GAMING SHUTDOWNS CONSISTENT

The Minns Labor Government will repeal outdated exemptions that allow pubs and clubs in NSW to vary their gaming machine operating hours. From 31 March 2026, all venues must observe a uniform six-hour daily shutdown of gaming machines between 4 am and 10 am, a measure aimed at reducing gambling harm. Over 670 venues currently operate under long-standing variations, many in place for more than 20 years, often due to tourist locations or financial hardship.

The decision follows a 2024 Liquor & Gaming NSW review, which found the six-hour shutdown effective and identified no reason to alter it. The Independent Panel for Gaming Reform recommended repealing all variations while providing a transition period. Venues may apply for exemptions under stricter new guidelines, with approval determined by the Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority.

The move is part of broader gambling reforms by the Government, including lower cash input limits, reductions in gaming machine entitlements, bans on political donations and visible gaming advertising, mandatory Responsible Gambling Officers, and implementation of Gambling Management Plans and incident registers. Minister David Harris emphasized that the reforms aim to minimise harm while supporting the industry, which contributes billions to the NSW economy and employs over 150,000 people.
