STRONGER PROTECTIONS – NSW GAMBLING REFORM

The Minns Labor Government has announced a major Gaming Reform Package aimed at reducing gambling harm, strengthening anti-money laundering protections and increasing regulatory oversight across NSW. Key measures include a statewide self-exclusion register expected to be operational in 2028, third-party exclusions initiated by police, venues, family or friends, and mandatory facial recognition technology to support exclusions.

The reforms also propose modernising gaming machine communications to enable account-based play, introducing monthly gambling activity statements, reducing Gaming Machine Entitlements through increased forfeiture rates and reviewing mandatory gaming shutdown periods. The Government will also establish an Innovation Sandbox to test emerging harm minimisation technologies and develop standards for voluntary account-based play.

The package extends beyond gaming venues, with proposed bans on harmful wagering marketing practices and gaming-related VIP programs, expanded gambling advertising restrictions, stronger regulatory and enforcement powers, and a new NSW strategy to address online gambling harm. The Government will also work with industry to reduce reliance on gaming revenue and has committed an additional $20 million to the Responsible Gambling Fund over two years.
