FORMER CRAFTY SQUIRE PUB ANNOUNCES OPENING WITH $6.5M TRANSFORMATION
A cornerstone in Melbourne’s CBD, known as Crafty Squire since 2015, has today announced that it will re-open as Hickens Hotel including four-levels with rooftop and Australia’s first Carlton Draught bar coming this winter.
Located on the bustling corner of Russell and Little Collins Street, the $6.5million renovation will include a complete transformation of the existing ground and first floors, as well as a brand-new second level, and an open-air rooftop overlooking the city. Plus, Australia’s first Carlton Draught bar.

The four-levelled watering hole will hero live sport and casual socialising, blending over 160 years of history and pub culture with a modernised offering, fit for every occasion.
Paul Waterson, CEO of Australian Venue Co – which operates over 200 of the country’s best-loved pubs and bars – says the collaboration with Carlton Draught on the ground floor bar will cultivate a vibrant and diverse experience for those in the CBD, “We’re excited about our collaboration with Carlton Draught and what it will bring to the multi-level pub offering we’re creating at Hickens. It will be the ultimate destination in the heart of the city.”
David Stingl, Sales Director of Asahi Beverages, which is the proud custodian of Carlton Draught, echoes the same eagerness to open, “This venue is more than just a bar – it’s a tribute to Melbourne’s rich brewing heritage that we’ve been part of since the 1860’s. We’re excited for our iconic lineup to have its own home at Hickens Hotel.
“And yes, we’ll be pouring the freshest Carlton Draught, just as it should be.”
Welcoming those on the ground floor, The Carlton Lounge will be the country’s first collaboration with this famous Victorian beer. Beer lovers will be served Brewery Fresh Carlton Draught Tank Beer straight from a glorious copper tank while enjoying the retro charm of a 70’s rumpus style lounge with archival memorabilia, pool tables and social seating.
Moving upwards, Level one will offer an approachable restaurant, bar and terrace for casual dining and drinks with family or friends.

On level two, guests will find a live sports and entertainment hub and bar with large LED screens, comfortable booth seating and arcade games. Creating a lively atmosphere for those wanting to catch all the live and loud action without missing a second of the fun.
And perched at the top, an all-new rooftop showcasing inner-city views, perfect for Friday knockoffs, weekend golden hours and social celebrations with a cocktail in-hand.
The 127 Russell Street building was originally established as Hickens Hotel during the 1870’s when it was named after the pub’s manager, landlord, and once infamous British boxer and Australian champion, Ebenezer “Abe” Hicken. And this winter, the once-again Hickens Hotel will re-open featuring nods to its former identity across the towering four-levels.
The future icon will be the unrivalled spot for high energy sports atmosphere, rooftop cocktails, mid-week work lunches, social eats, private events and everything in between.
