MINIMISING GAMBLING HARM REPORT – QLD

The Queensland Audit Office has just tabled a report on Minimising gambling harm Report 9: 2023-24. The report investigates the current strategies in place to minimise and prevent gambling related harm. In fact, the report concludes that in many cases they don’t know if the current strategies are successful and outlines many new ways gambling harm regulations and strategies could change to ensure they could better evaluate their success.

The QLD Audit Office in the report suggests that both the gambling industry and the government have an important role in minimising gambling harm through prevention, support, and treatment.

This is similar to the measures recently implemented in NSW and VIC where the responsibility has moved from the gambler themselves, to ensuring that the gambling venues are more proactive in responding to signs of gambling related problems.

They report outlines 10 recommendations to improve how the department protects consumers and communities from gambling harm and to strengthen research, regulation, and implementation of its strategies.
