‘RATE MY BOSS’ WEBSITE A POTENTIAL SHAKE-UP OF HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY

The union behind a website that allows workers to review their employers says it is a step towards improving working conditions, but a legal expert warns it could produce a defamation headache.

‘Rate My Boss’ is a website funded by United Voice that allows users to share their experiences and frustrations relating to their employers in the hospitality industry and give them a rating out of five stars.

While some reviews praise employers for being “caring and respectful” and providing a “motivational place to work”, others raise potential issues of defamation.

One anonymous review of a Ballarat restaurant said “dodgy accounting and under the table deals with local authorities keep this place in business. Chronic underpayment of staff wages”.

“I feel sorry for the poor kids who work there, some for as little as $10 an hour,” the review said.

More than 1,000 reviews had been uploaded to the website since it was established in December 2017.

LIBS WIN TASMANIA

The Liberals won a majority in Saturday’s Tasmania elections. They will continue to govern for four years.

Labor’s stance on pokies was a defining element in the campaign. Labor leader Rebecca White had pledged to remove poker machines from clubs and pubs by 2023 (but allow them to remain in casinos). Some of the Labor candidates said it had hurt the party’s prospects in parts of the state.

It also mobilised gambling and hospitality groups against the opposition. “Labor and the Greens think you’re stupid. What’s next? Don’t let them tell you what to do.” This was the message plastered on billboards above pubs across the State.

The ads were the work of Love Your Local, a campaign by pubs and clubs set up to fight Labor leader Rebecca White over her historic pledge.

But Labor and the Greens (who had one of their worst results ever) were not gracious losers. Both parties have decried the role of wealthy vested interests in the election with Rebecca White making accusations that seats had been “bought”. She said the gambling industry had helped to fund a vast advertising campaign on behalf of the Liberals.

 

 

NEW CEO AT ATLAS GAMING

Australian games maker Atlas Gaming has appointed a new CEO, Geoffrey McDowell. McDowell was previously managing director Asia-Pacific and global gaming general manager at SuzoHapp.
