THE SHERWOOD LAUNCHES WITH EXPANSIVE ALFRESCO COURTYARD AND OPEN-AIR LIVE SPORT

Southwest Sydney is getting a new immersive sport viewing and open-air dining destination with the launch of ‘The Sherwood’, a pub style venue located next to the beating heart of live sport, Campbelltown Sports Stadium.

A far cry from the former tennis club that once occupied the space, The Sherwood is a multi-million-dollar investment and will feature a large courtyard with lush greenery, alfresco dining, and live entertainment year-round.

The food experience is reminiscent of a nostalgic milk bar with an entire menu section dedicated to hand-smashed burgers, local beef pounded with a retro burger press and slathered with Chef Kurtis’ homemade signature sauce.

Those brave enough can indulge in the ‘Double Woodi Deluxe’ which features a double beef base, double bacon, double cheese, pickles, lettuce, tomato, onion and a fried egg which is the perfect sustenance to pair with live sport that will be rolling on screen.

Share-style dishes feature prominently with ‘Pork Belly’ tossed in Korean BBQ sauce with mayo, and fresh ‘Roku Gin Cured Kingfish’ including coconut cream, herb oil and shiso.

Taking the helm as venue manager is Julia Maulguet who intends to embrace nostalgia with an impressive signature cocktail menu that borrows from familiar flavours with a fun twist like the ‘Rainbow Paddle Pop’, with hints of caramel and rainbow sprinkles, best enjoyed in the alfresco dining courtyard. There will also be a wide selection of tap beers including rotating taps dedicated to partnerships with local brewers.

The Sherwood is the latest addition to the Wests Group Macarthur portfolio, which also includes: Wests League Club Campbelltown, Country Club Gledswood Hills and Lakeside Golf Club Camden, and marks a new milestone direction for the group.

Chief executive, Daniel Perkiss said, “The Sherwood is bringing the local community a new style of venue to create a world-class sports and entertainment precinct right in our own backyard. Our team has achieved a tavern style open plan feel, complemented by an enormous four and half-meter by two and a half-metre outdoor screen to deliver optimum sports viewing and on trend dining in a package not-traditionally seen by club operators.”

Curtin Architects teamed up with Interior Designer Ruth Harris from Redwah Design Studio to bring this epic venue to life. The venue subtly creates different gathering spaces: dining, sports lounge, family with a multi-seasonal element celebrating community connection and the great outdoors. The finishes are a combination of premium textures including marble, stone, timber joinery, lush planting and gold touches all delivered with a classic retro vibe.

As part of Wests Group commitment to represent the local area, there’s a map of Campbelltown on a large steel panel on the side of the building as well as carpet inside. The name ‘The Sherwood’ was inspired by the former suburb, Sherwood Hills, a gentle nod to the history of Campbelltown.

There’s even a reference to the world’s most famous outlaw, Robin Hood who “in Sherwood (forest) stood” with artist Joe Quilter creating a large graffiti style mural in the courtyard. Sherwood Forest in the UK was said to be Robin Hood and the Merry Men’s hideout.
